Protecting the Integrity of Satellite Data Downlinks for NOAA

Conducting engineering analysis, feasibility studies, and systems engineering to minimize data loss in the NOAA satellite data downlink, protecting America’s weather forecasting and monitoring, aviation safety, and disaster response.

Case Study

Safeguarding Critical NOAA Satellite Data

NOAA’s Radio Frequency Information Monitoring Systems (RFIMS) safeguard the satellite data essential to national weather forecasting, environmental monitoring, aviation safety, and disaster response. As RF interference becomes an increasing challenge, maintaining reliable, interference‑free satellite downlinks is vital. RFIMS provides NOAA with the capability to monitor and respond to interference risks, ensuring continuity and accuracy in the data that supports critical operations across the country.

American Interests,

By the Numbers

85MHz

Critical NOAA satellite downlink spectrum monitored to reduce interference risk across wide frequency ranges, including the 1695–1710 MHz AWS‑3 sharing band

5,000+ Miles

RFIMS engineering, operational, and sustainment support deployed across NOAA’s geographically diverse RFIMS locations in Boulder, Wallops Island, Honolulu, and Miami

9+ Years

Lifecycle RFIMS support from engineering analysis and deployment through operations, sustainment, modernization, and transition planning

The Mission

NOAA’s RFIMS protect critical satellite data used for weather forecasting, environmental monitoring, aviation safety, and disaster response. RF interference in the 1695–1710 MHz band can cause data loss during satellite transmissions, reducing the quality and timeliness of this essential information. NOAA needed support to evaluate solutions, reduce interference risk across 85 MHz of monitored spectrum, and maintain reliable monitoring across geographically diverse locations.

Our Solution

Entarian supports NOAA’s RFIMS through engineering analysis, feasibility studies, and systems engineering. This work evaluates enterprise solutions and integrates RFIMS components when beneficial, helping protect the integrity of satellite data downlinks and reducing interference impacts in the 1695–1710 MHz band. Support spans the full lifecycle—from analysis and deployment through operations, sustainment, modernization, and transition planning.

Results

Enhanced Interference Awareness

RFIMS monitoring improves NOAA’s ability to identify and understand RF interference in the 1695–1710 MHz band, reducing the risk of data loss during satellite transmissions that support weather forecasting, environmental monitoring, aviation safety, and disaster response.

Strengthened Satellite Data Integrity

Engineering analysis, feasibility studies, and systems engineering reinforce the reliability of satellite data downlinks, ensuring critical weather and environmental data remain accurate and timely.

Integrated Enterprise Support

Evaluation of enterprise solutions and targeted integration of RFIMS components enhance NOAA’s broader system capabilities, supporting consistent and effective protection of mission‑critical data.

Long‑Term Operational Stability

Lifecycle support—from deployment through operations, sustainment, modernization, and transition planning—maintains stable, modernized RFIMS performance across NOAA’s geographically diverse sites.
